There is language missing from the breast cancer journey.
We use the word survivor, and we honor it.
But for some of us, it does not completely describe the experience.
You didn’t simply survive something.
You went through something.
A battle changed your body, your mind, your relationships, your perspective, and sometimes the entire direction of your life.
That is why Pink Battalion introduces another way of understanding this chapter:
Breast Cancer Veteranhood.
A military veteran is no longer serving in active duty, but carries the experiences of that service forward.
Breast Cancer Veteranhood draws from that transition, not to suggest that the two experiences or sacrifices are the same, but to give language to what happens when the active phase of a breast cancer battle changes and you must learn to live with what the battle left behind.
Some scars are visible.
Some scars nobody sees.
Both matter.
And veteranhood does not require you to pretend cancer made you fearless.
You may still have questions.
You may still have fear.
You may still be rebuilding.
You can be grateful to be alive and still admit that some days are hard.
Both things can be true.
And you belong here.
Pink Battalion welcomes people across the breast cancer experience, including women and men, people whose treatment journeys look very different from one another, and those whose medical circumstances do not fit neatly into a traditional “ring the bell and you’re finished” story.
Within our Battalion, we also honor those who stood in the battle:
Living Veterans: those carrying forward the lived experience of breast cancer.
Collateral Veterans: spouses, children, parents, caregivers, family and loved ones whose lives were changed by fighting alongside someone they love.
Legacy Veterans: those whose lives ended, but whose stories, courage and legacy continue.
This is bigger than a label.
Veteranhood is about what comes next.
Not returning to who you were.
But discovering who you are now.
